6. Defense - Support Role
You are in a defensive support role when the opponents have the puck and you already have 1-2 teammates actively pressuring the puck carrier.
This is one of the most critical distinctions to make in hockey. Your job is not to watch the puck. The pillar of effective defensive play when away from the puck is to not be puck-focused, and instead eliminate the potential passing options.
From there, we can either decide to support defensively from the middle of the ice, from direct man-on-man coverage or from a “hybrid” mix of the two.
