7. Defense - Team Systems
Once you understand how to play effectively both on the puck and away from the puck defensively, you can then work in strategic coordination with your teammates to create a tactical advantage over the opposing team through defensive team system play.
The pillar for good defensive team play is defending middle-ice off turnovers. Goals are frequently scored in the first few seconds of a transition while the defensive team is still working to re-gain their structure. But if you can quickly and effectively shut down the most dangerous areas of the ice in the midst of chaos, you will hold a strong tactical advantage over your opponents.
For the purpose of this program, we will be focused on three primary defensive systems - forechecks, backchecks and d-zone coverages.
