Accelerated Development Framework
My custom Accelerated Development Framework is my curriculum for teaching all skills. The goal of this framework is to provide players with a clear and tangible path for continued development.
There are three main components to this framework:
1. NHL video analysis
2. Concise skill inventories
3. Development system
NHL Video Analysis
The Accelerated Development Framework starts by utilizing NHL game film & video analysis to determine what top NHL players are currently doing to be successful in games.
I don’t want to waste time teaching skills that are seldom used at the highest levels. Instead, I focus on what to teach first based on the 80/20 rule - 20% of skills that will produce 80% of the results.
There are common recurring skills that NHLers perform over and over and over during games that serve as the foundation for all future skill development.
Skill Inventories
Once I have established what NHL players are doing to be successful, I then reverse-engineer these abilities into clear and concise skill inventories for my players.
Players need a visual representation of specifically what they need to do. This is why having a dedicated skill inventory is so important. It shows players exactly what they need to get better at to progress to higher levels.
My inventories give each skill a name and purpose so we can all be on the same page with exactly what we are learning. Each skill is associated with multiple in-game NHL clip examples which show players exactly how to do it and when it is used in a game.
Development System
Now that we have a clear skill inventory in place, we need to craft an optimal development system and training plan to ensure we make continual improvements in each skill area.
The basis for learning any skill is guided repetition and progression. Players must be continually challenged to push their limits while having a direct focus on what exactly they are trying to improve.
This will help my players ensure they get results by sticking with my structured program & curriculum, instead of just random lessons with random coaches.
