2.2 - Foundational Reads - Roles
Reading Your Role
Within each possession read (offense vs defense) you will always be filling one of two possible roles. You will either be in an “on-the-puck” role or an “off-the-puck” (support) role.
“On-the-puck” is defined as either being the puck carrier on offense or the player closest to the puck on defense. All the other players away from the puck (whether by 10 feet or 100 feet) are supporting players all in “off-the-puck” roles.
Role Changes
It is important to note, your role is constantly changing throughout a shift. One second you could be offense on-the-puck, the next you are defense off-the-puck (support). You need to be able to seamlessly switch between roles with little-to-no lag time.
Recap
Role 1 - Offense on the puck (the puck carrier) Role 2 - Offense off the puck (offensive support) Role 3 - Defense on the puck (the closest defender to the puck) Role 4 - Defense off the puck (defensive support)
