4.3.2 - Create Space - Cutback
1. Punch
Use a punch turn or punch stop to slam on the brakes and turn away from pressure. If your technical punch skills are lacking, so will your cutbacks.
2. Crossover to Accelerate
Quickly cross your feet multiple times to re-build speed and seperate out of the cutback. This distinction is critical. Many players will cutback, but stay in place after the cutback. This basically defeats the purpose because although you fooled the defender, you didnt effectively create any space. Using crossovers to get away is the key.
3. Scan
Pick your head up out of the cutback before moving the puck. You will have usually bought yourself a second or two of time & space, so use it to scan the ice and make the best play available.
