4.3.3 - Create Space - Lateral Move
1. Quick Cut
Use your skating to quickly cut one direction to the side of your opponent. There are many different ways you can do this. A few common ways to quickly cut laterally are:
- Anchor
- Soft Drag
- Crossover
- Punch
- Shuffle
2. Pull Puck
As you cut, simultaneously pull the puck wide in the direction you are cutting. Use the momentum of your skating to pull the puck fast. Your hands and feet should be in sync, with the puck always traveling in the same direction as your skating. This is the arc with arc concept, meaning whatever arc you are skating on (you are always skating on an arc), the puck travels on the same arc.
3. Accelerate or Protect
Once you make your cut and pull, quickly accelerate to open space. This can typically be with crossovers, but you can also use strides or a quick-start method.
Another option is to protect the puck immediately after making your cut. This can typically be in the form of using your knee (shuffle) or wide legs (corkscrew) right after your move.
