5.1 - Pillars
Pillars are the non-negotiable skills that must be done every single time you are filling a specific role. Without pillars in place, all other tactics fall apart.
You can never be too good at these skills. NHLers frequently practice these pillar skills even though they are the best of the best.
Serve the Puck Carrier
Anytime you are in an offense off the puck (support) role, your objective is to work as hard as possible to serve the puck carrier. This can mean many different things, but the mindset is important.
Many players think they need to wait for the puck carrier to find them, but in reality it is the opposite. You need to make yourself constantly available, and this takes hard work and effort away from the puck to sprint to open space. You need to decide whether the puck carrier needs close support or far support, and work as hard as possible to make that happen.
You need to be constantly communicating to the puck carrier whether you are open or not, and you need to be puck-ready anytime you are supporting the puck.
