Your Homework - Watch an NHL Game
Watch 1 hour of NHL game film. Use the prompts below to guide your thought process as you watch.
Read Game Patterns - 20 Min
2.4 - Foundational Reads - Patterns - Offense
2.5 - Foundational Reads - Patterns - Defense
Choose one team to focus on. Spend 20 minutes watching from that team’s perspective reading the game patterns they are in. Specifically watch for each of the four offensive and defensive patterns.
- Offense - Breakout (D-Zone)
- Offense - Regroup (N-Zone)
- Offense - Rush (N-Zone)
- Offense - Cycle (O-Zone Possession)
- Defense - Forecheck (O-Zone or N-Zone)
- Defense - Backcheck (N-Zone)
- Defense - Coverage (D-Zone)
- Defense - Swarm (Any Zone)
Read Space Creation Habits - 20 Min
Watch both teams. Spend 20 minutes watching from from the perspective of the offense with the puck role. Look for all of the different ways they create space and separation from defenders while carrying the puck. Specifically, watch for:
- The read - protect the puck anytime you are within 2 stick lengths of an opponent
- Mohawk puck protection (using backside)
- Shuffle puck protection (using knee)
- Corkscrew puck protection (wide legs)
Read Quick Puck Movement - 20 Min
4.1.2 - Pillar - Puck Movement
Get a piece of paper and a pencil. Watch both teams. Spend 20 minutes watching from from the perspective of the offense with the puck role. Count how long each player holds the puck for before moving it. Make a tally chart like you see below and chart how often the puck is held between 0-3 seconds and how often it is held longer than 3 seconds.
Puck held 0-3 seconds | Puck held 3+ seconds |

Where to Find NHL Games
If you aren’t able to catch a game live or don’t have the ability to record games, here are a couple alternatives (free and paid):
Free Option - https://nhlfullgame.com
I frequently use this site to download NHL game film. They don’t have every game, but there is plenty to choose from.
Paid Option - https://plus.espn.com/nhl
This is the best option for watching NHL games if you dont mind paying $12 / month. You can go back and re-watch recent games, or catch many out-of-market games live.
