Create Reminders
One thing I recommend all players do is to take charge of their own development. Don’t wait for your parents to remind you to do everything - be proactive instead.
Find a way to set reminders or schedule notifications for our on-ice sessions, zoom meetings and homework assignments.
This way, you will always be able stay on top of what you need to be doing in this program to be successful.
You can view the full program schedule on the home page of the playbook. Create a reminder for each event. Also create a weekly reminder to do your homework - both for NHL game film analysis and your weekly playbook lessons.
Get to the Rink Early
Whenever possible, aim to get to the rink at least 30 minutes prior to our on-ice sessions. When you are late, you are missing out on critical development opportunities and the only one really being impacted by this is you.
Be responsible for your own attendance and punctuality.
Give 101%
When you step on the ice, give your very best, every rep. That is how you truly improve. Push yourself and push your fellow students of the game to grow in ways that make you uncomfortable.
Giving 100% is where you are at right now. Anyone can give 100% of their effort and ability. But I want to push you to aim for just more than that - 101%. That extra 1% beyond what you are currently capable of is where development happens.
Try New Things
You have permission to fail. And to try something new and fail again. This is the real way we learn. Experience is the best teacher.
You will never get in trouble for doing something wrong. But you will get in trouble for repeating the same bad habits over and over without trying to push yourself for a new solution. One mistake isn’t a bad thing. It is what you learn from the mistake that truly matters.
Ask Questions
My best players are always the ones that ask the most questions. It is my job to teach you. But there is no way for me to know what you dont know or what you are confused about. So ask. Tell me.
I want to hear your questions, because it means you are engaged and truly committed to working on your craft.
You can ask me anything in person. And if it’s away from the rink, email me at tonysteege@gmail.com. Don’t let yourself get stuck. Ask away.
